South Dakota needs strong commonsense conservative leadership. District 7 should be represented by an experienced legislator in the State Senate. Tim Reed will use his 19 years of experience as a public servant to make sure South Dakota will continue to be the best place to live, work, and raise a family.
During Tim's eight years in the State Legislature, he has been successful in passing bills helping city and county government, SDSU, bio-product research and development, mental health care, sexual and domestic abuse victims, increase childcare capacity and eliminating sex trafficking of minors.
Tim Reed, a Brookings SD native and a member of the Republican Party, is currently serving as District 7’s Senator to the South Dakota Legislature. Before his election to the Legislature, he served in Brookings City Government for a total of 13 years, 8 years as Mayor.
Reed earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Commercial Economics from South Dakota State University in 1988. After graduation, Tim worked in Supply Chain Planning, Information Technology, and College Development. During his time as the Development Director for the South Dakota State University College of Engineering, he led successful fund-raising efforts for three building projects and an endowed professorship.
During Tim’s tenure in city government, he led efforts to improve transparency, sustainability, the entrepreneurial ecosystem, and was a proponent of economic vibrancy. Tim was awarded the SDSU Presidential Special Citation and Medallion by President David Chicoine to recognize his efforts in campus and community relations. He was also awarded the Larson Family Tourism Champion Award in 2016.
As a state legislator, Tim has served on Commerce and Energy, Taxation, Judiciary, and Local Government Committees. He represents South Dakota on the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board. He is a member of the South Dakota Unified Justice System’s Drug Court Advisory Council and the Oversight Committee on Improving Criminal Justice Responses for Persons with Mental Illness.
During Tim's eight years in the State Legislature, he has been active with city and county government, South Dakota State University, mental healthcare, sex trafficking, and sexual assault victim assistance bills.
In 2017, Representative Reed was among 37 select lawmakers chosen to participate in the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development training program that annually identifies and assists promising state leaders in the Midwest. Tim was appointed to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education Legislative Advisory Committee in 2019.
In 2020, Representative Reed was awarded the National Sexual Violence Resource Center Visionary Award for sponsoring and successfully passing several victim-centered sexual assault advocacy bills. In 2024 Tim was awarded the Law & Order Legislative Leadership Award from the South Dakota State's Attorneys Association.
In recognition of his support for disabled veterans, Representative Reed was awarded the 2020 Disabled American Veterans Outstanding State Representative Award.
Tim currently serves as the CEO for the Brookings Economic Development Corporation.
During the past eight years, I've been able to effectively serve District 7 and South Dakota through pragmatic legislative activity and serving on governing boards, study committees, task forces, and advisory committees.
